The Ogden Marathon has always been an event that requires an extreme amount of planning and preparation by many different organizations, one of those organizations is the Ogden City Fire Department.
The Ogden City Fire Department has been a proud partner of the GOAL foundation and Ogden Marathon from the start. We participate in the emergency preparation and response to ensure the safety of runners, sponsors, and spectators. This year I saw their participation from a different vantage point, as a runner.
The dedication it takes to train your body and mind for the task of running a 5k, half marathon, or full marathon can not be overstated. It is a challenge for every individual, some run for a cause, others run to race, and some run to prove to themselves that they can do hard things. I found myself looking for this challenge and the accomplishment of doing hard things. I recall the mental toughness participants had and the amazing support that strangers gave each other but I vividly recall coming out of the Ogden Canyon. As my mind told my legs to keep moving, I heard some familiar voices, two members of Ogden Fire were screaming at runners to “keep going”, “you’re doing great”. These two Paramedics were assigned as medical support for the race but on their own they became mental support for those runners coming out of the canyon, I could not have been prouder of these two fine individuals.
That is what a true partnership is, doing what is best for everyone and encouraging all. The Ogden Marathon brings out the best in people, not only the participants but the spectators that cheer them on. I anticipate and hope that our relationship with GOAL and the Ogden Marathon will be a long lasting one.
Sincerely,
Mike Slater
